Management

Urban Rec is run and organized by a crack team of full time staff including Steve Laing, Chris McNally, Dale Matsuda, Rob Stewart, Monica Davis, Nazim Hasham, Edward Vint and Stephanie Manou.

In addition to the full time staff, Urban Rec employs between 15-45 event coordinators at various event venues to help make sure that everyone is having a great time out there.

Here is a little more about each of our full time staff.

Steve Laing, Co-Founder & Managing Partner
A managing partner of Urban Rec, Steve has worked extensively at both UBC and SFU in the Recreation and Athletics departments organizing and executing special events, tournaments and sporting leagues.   He has had experience with such international events as the Air Canada Championship Golf Tournament and several international collegiate sporting championships in swimming & track and field.  In addition to Urban Rec, he also operates a timing and results services company called Winning Time Canada.  Steve is a graduate of UBC.

Chris McNally, Co-Founder & Managing Partner
Chris founded Max Fun Sports & Entertainment in 2001 and quickly established it as a top notch sports and social club with a creative flair for new events and a participant focus.  In 2003 Chris partnered with Steve Laing to bring Max Fun to the next level, which they did when in 2004 Max Fun Merged with Vancouver Sport.com to form what is today known as Urban Rec.  Chris is a life long sports fan and very active in a variety of sports.  He holds a B.A.Sc and an MBA from UBC and is married to his wife Amanda and has two children Jacob and Penelope.

Dale Matsuda, Director of League Operations
After a 5-year stint in Japan coaching volleyball and playing hockey, Dale joined the Urban Rec ranks as a League Manager.  After learning the ropes, Dale has taken on the reigns of overseeing league operations.  An avid sports enthusiast, Dale can be found playing ice hockey, golf and volleyball year-round.  Dale's previous experience at the University of British Columbia provides him with an ideal background for taking Urban Rec Leagues and events to the next level.   Dale is also a graduate of UBC (B.Sc.).

Rob Stewart, Business Analyst & Administration
Robbie Stew is known to almost all Urban Rec participants.  As a former event coordinator, Rob has seen almost all aspects of the Urban Rec experience.  He is now repsonsible for all the behind the scene work that helps create the Urban Rec experience.  You can also see Rob at various volleyball, dodgeball and softball leagues throughout the year.  Rob is engaged to be married later in 2012.

Nazim Hasham, League & Events Manager - Vancouver Area
Naz as his friends call him has been part of the Urban Rec family since April 2009. After a productive career in the Telecommunications industry Naz moved on to a more leisure oriented industry. After a very successful season as the Urban Beach Manager in April 2009, he has been the manager of all the Vancouver and Richmond leagues. He has also been a key in making those legendary Urban Rec events and parties just that, legendary. Always someone you can talk to about our leagues, events or just to shoot the breeze.

A hard core Canucks fan, Naz brings a positive attitude and unbridled enthusiasm to the Urban Rec Team!  Look for Naz at your league night, special event or party.

Stephanie Manou, Administrative Assistant
Stephanie joins Urban Rec after being an Urban Rec volleyball player for many years. Armed with a BHK from UBC, Stephanie has worked with the Douglas College summer camp programs, Volleyball BC youth programs, and continues to run her own health and wellness company in Vancouver. When she is not answering e-mails and uploading game stats, you can find her training for and playing beach volleyball on one of Vancouver's local beaches eight months of the year. The other four months you can find her running Stanley Park with her two beautiful akita puppies or playing at the Urban Rec indoor volleyball tournaments.

Edward Vint, Events and Sponsorship Manager
Edward joins Urban Rec after an awesome stint working in the event and music industry at MTV, Universal Music & Live Nation.  With lots of event experience under his belt, Ed looked to Urban Rec as an outlet for his passion for parties and love of being active.
Born and raised in the Lower Mainland, Ed loves being outside, especially in or near the water. If it’s sunny, you will probably find him at the beach; if it’s cold and raining, you’ll find him at the pool. Want to get involved in any of Urban Rec's great events? Hit him up, and if he doesn’t hear you the first time, it’s probably because his music is too loud so, if you don’t mind, holler a bit louder.
He holds a diploma in Broadcast Journalism and his BCRPA Fitness Leader designation.
